Workshop Overview

The purpose of this workshop is to train one or two teachers in a school to work with their staff to support the learning of students with a learning difficulty. These trainers will then have the skills to teach their school’s teachers more about how to work in partnership with the parents of all students and more particularly with students who experience learning difficulties.
It is aimed at all levels from Foundation to Year 12 and from new graduates to experienced practitioners.

Schools, teachers and parents are busy and there are ways a teacher can work with parents that will produce the best outcome for each child’s learning in the school setting. Teachers will also learn about the importance of supporting themselves through this journey. Through supporting parents a school can improve outcomes for both students and teachers.

What is covered?

  • How a parent’s experience of school can impact on their child’s experience.

  • How you can support a parent to identify a Specific Learning Difficulty such as dyslexia, dyscalculia or dyspraxia.

  • How the school can support parents to identify a Specific Learning Difficulty such as dyslexia, dyscalculia or dyspraxia.

  • How to share information about a child’s schooling with parents.

  • How to talk to parents about specific learning difficulties.

  • How to get involved in planning, monitoring and measuring each child’s progress.

Understanding how a child’s needs will change throughout the school journey including how to support a child at each stage.

 

Presenter:

Tessa Calder

Tessa Calder, is an experienced teacher in the Victorian Government school sector. She is the former Principal of Highton Primary (a school that is involved in the Inclusion Support Program) who now works as a mentor and coach for new principals, teachers and pre-service teachers. Having worked as a teacher since 1985, Tessa is well placed to guide parents in how to navigate the school environment and build a strong relationship with your child’s teacher and school.
